B44 - 2nd Gear Mystery

Bit of History first, US import 1968 B44SS, purchased from a UK Bike Jumble in 2018. Used as purchased for about a month or 50 miles, no issues. A £2k Nut Bolt resto during 2018/19. First 5 mile test run, no issues other than chain guard rubbing. Second 10 mile test run, 2nd gear would only partiall...

Re: QD Hub

Did BSA use more than one type of QD hub? Does anyone know? Did they make them with different spline pitches?

Re: QD Hub

That's may be a way to put the wheel on, but what happens when you want to get it off. No there must be a reason why it's so tight.

Re: QD Hub

I have tried it at various orientation some are worse than others. The best position still needs to engage about another 3/8" more of engagement.

QD Hub

Has anybody experienced problems with the mating of QD hubs. I have QD hub on my B44SS which was extremely difficult to part and now after a good clean of the splines I can only get about half engagement. Any idea's guys?

B44 Crank cases

Has anybody got a set of matched B44 engine cases or a B44 Timing side crank case stamped 41-508/A for sale? Please note that the Timing Side Case must have a barrel aperture of 88mm diameter. Must be in good order. I'm in the UK, Berkshire area, but I am willing to travel. Thank you.

C15 Overheating

My C15 has recently developed a habit of overheating, 8 stroking and stalling. I then pull over and kick her over, she starts usually after the first or second kick, ticks over as though nothing has happened and off we go. There doesn't seem to be any mechanical seizure, just very hot and a lumpy en...

TR25W Trophy (B25 Re-Badged)

Has any one had the same experience as I have, when trying to start my newly restored 1970 TR25. After going through two knees, a couple of pairs of boots I found that the only way to start my bike is this: A couple of tickles, no throttle and about 1 1/2 turns of the throttle adjuster screw, which ...

Re: Can't get 1st Gear

Just re-assembled the gearbox and found all 4 gears + neutral. Not easily, but a great improvement from before, hopefully it will be easier when the wheels/engine is running. Basically, with the filing of the cam plate between neutral and 1st and general de-burring of the tracks and selector slots, ...

Re: Can't get 1st Gear

Hi Guy's,

Just successfully selected all gears, including Neutral to 1st. So I will do a dry run with all the bits in and try my luck. :ban

Just like to thank you all for the good advice, keep up the good work.

Cheers Terryb

Re: Can't get 1st Gear

OK Guy's some success. I've managed to select 4 gears + neutral, several times with just the cam plate and quadrant fitted. I achieved this by filing the cam plate as per HPSTAN's article. I've bottled out of filing material off of the casing. Only problem is that I can get 1st gear, Neutral, 2nd, 3...

Re: Can't get 1st Gear

Hi Guy's. Here is my progress report. Dug out the old Alpha spring and there was previous sign's of interference, so did a small amount of filing and general clean-up of the cam plate. Still not reaching 1st gear slot, using Quadrant. Managed to assemble cam plate minus quadrant and it slots into al...

Re: Can't get 1st Gear

Test - Quadrant with spring and cam plate attached to inner cover. Layshaft + gears removed and inner cover assembly attached with top and bottom bolts. Gear leaver operated and inspection light. Result - cam plate stopping halfway to 1st gear, but will not go any further, looks like all other gears...

Re: Can't get 1st Gear

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I think I have all of the thrust washers/shims, but one of them appears to be attached to one of the gears and not loose. Is this normal? Today I will strip the box and check the operation of the cam plate, it is quite possible that this could be the problem. Again, I'm n...

Can't get 1st Gear

Sorry Guy's, but this is a non B50 question, humble apologies. 1970 TR25W (B25 rebadged) - this has been a complete rebuild, the gear cluster was part assembled and the guy I brought the bike from informed me that it needed a main shaft shim/spacer. I'm having trouble trying to select 1st gear, eith...

TR25W Auto-advance Cam

Can anybody tell me what A/R unit I should have on a 1970 TR25W. The one I have been given with the engine is stamped 11 1/2 degs is this correct? According to the parts manual it should be a Lucas 54416405 which equates to 10 deg.

B25 Clutch

Hi Guy's, I'm building up a B25 clutch and it has 5 friction plates and 5 plain plates. The cush drive assembly is the later type without a flange. According to Rupert Ratio there is a thrust washer between the back flange on the clutch centre and the rollers, when installing a 5 plate clutch. This ...
