CCM B50 1977

Postby AJ CCM » Thu Jul 15, 2010 9:55 pm

Hi Everyone a New member to the forum.
I purchased my CCM from Vic Eastwood in November 1977 one of the CCM works bikes and he converted it to a Enduro so that I could ride it on the roads as well as off road, yes with the straight thro exhaust and got stopped a few times by the police.
I rode till May 1980 and sadly it has been gathering dust since then (shame on me) in the garage.
I have finally decided to restore it to its former glory and am looking for help and guidance on stripping down and rebuilding the engine from anyone who lives near Shropshire, as I am not very mechanically minded.
I will definitely be contacting Mark Cook for new parts etc.
Mark what a great web site and service you are offering.
Look forward to all the banter.

Regards Alan Jones

Welcome to the forum Alan, you are in the right place.

Couple of housekeeping things, don't know if using your real name is wise (unless you are a business) the internet is a wild crazy place, and most of the nutters are here...(Let me or Rickard know if you want to change it). In your profile you can put where you are (I think we alow people from Shropshire to post!!), post some pictures of what you have an what state its in, and if you want to leave your bike in the shed, thats your perogative, but glad you have a hankering to get it out.

All the help you will ever need is here, and we will do all we can to help. post away!! :ok

Hope you dont mind, but I'll remove the identical post from the Tech section, I do that sometimes

So AJ now you can post pictures of your CCM and still go down the pub and not be recognised...

Right Cook, you sneaky b'stard!

Any more tricks like that and I'll stop just popping round, drinking your tea, stopping you working, asking you for tips and advice, trying to cadge bits, etc. Then what sort of business would you have, eh?

Bossy - you have too much time on your hands, or you've been sniffing too many petrol leaks. Anyone who's seen me ride knows it's more like Gordon Banks, or Jeff, or even Morwena!

Both John Banks and I are in this photo. Can you identify which is which?

johnbanksug4crop.jpg

Robbo - I'm only Jan to my Swiss friends. At weekends. Unless you ask really nicely ...

Minety - you're right, there do seem to be too many dodgy pictures of me on the internet now! Maybe I ought to change my name. How about Banksy? No-one knows what he looks like ...

Why do you want to remove it Alan?

Ok let's assume you have a good reason. You'll need to make or find some thing to press the stem though so that the force is localised to the area the stem passes through. Much safer with the magnesium yoke. Some heat might help to, but don't over do it or you could ruin the heat treatment.

Thanks for your quick responce.
I want to powder coat the Yoke also the thread on the stem is binding with the steering head nut so these will need replacing.

make a " Hook-hammer " to go inside the tank by the cap.
hold it on the dent center inside.
then hammering on the outside to the dent by covering it with a pice of hard wood.
with a bit of " feeling" and experience you get it back in place where it belongs.
beat <982
( I know, to made the Hookhammer takes more time then to do the rest of the job :( )

AJ, You could try phoning the ccm factory ,Rachel may be able to help.Do you have the frame number , it should be stamped on the lower steering stem behind the front number plate. Tel CCM on 01204 544930. ccmicon Regards Rob.... NB i am very envious of this project . that 77 bike is one of the best CCm models out there . good luck , and keep posting the pictures. Perhaps i should elaborate, your bike looks very much a 77 model. if you go onto project 76 ccm and look at the third picture of the seat frame rails where in one loop they join the large top tube, then look at the first picture of your frame , you will see that the same tubes are butt welded to the down tubes. Iwould also expect your swingarm to have a gussetts on the underside, these gussetts do not exist on my bike. Thankfully to date i have not bent my swingarm! ccmicon ..Rob....

Hi Rob

The Frame was made in 1977 Frame No 77086, the gussets are the full length of the underside of the swinging arm.
I will ring CCM and hopefully find the year is was manufactured.

Looks like your crankcases got changed by someone Alan. As for the plating, be very carefull. All the frames I've seen that have been prepared and stripped by the platers don't turn out so good. It would pay to get it back after it's been stripped and polish it yourself. You'll also find any possible damage that the platers proberly won't see or care about. As plating it should be nickle chromed.

What Rob was on about was that Mike Eatough's company made the frames up till early 77. After a bit of a falling out, Clews started making his own frames. On the last of the Eatough frames the wheels lined up. He never told Clews  As you'll see looking at the Eatough frames they were much more "Arty" Clews built them down to a price.

Bonjour AJ CCM

What you ultimately want to finish? Tank painted or aluminum just polished ?
I had the same bumps on my tank CCM 78.
At times the work of weld on the tank, the specializes swollen the tank and heat up the cavity, the result is very ugly, troughs do not come back fully in place, the tank is more symmetrical. <1001
I opted painting. Using a bent piece of iron passed through the fill hole I pushed the hollow at best, and then used the putty aluminum body.
The easiest in my opinion, to keep the look of polished aluminum, is to cut the inside of the tank to access the hump and be able to recover in the hammer like a car body, if necessary with addition of aluminum welding to fill peckish. The work was completed, the cut is reweld .
