kickstand spring

Postby 2manyrides » Sat Feb 13, 2010 11:00 pm

Hey all.
I found a source for stainless steel kickstand springs. They are beautiful, not cheap.

If a spring costs that much, you will have to hold it on with some gold thread...

Having a mooooving frenzy 2many, sorry.....MM

nice.
all we need now is a source for the proper bolt/screw. if you haven't got the bolt with the countersunk, slotted head, eventually the spring will catch on the head and bugger the spring and if you haven't got something to tie the stand up with ...can be a tad inconvenient.
a lot of nice stuff on their site, thanks, 2many.

MM;
thanks for the move! I've been worrying all night that I posted in the wrong place.
And yes, I'm always paying 2many dollars for the goodies I get. The supplier stated that they're difficult to produce.

Steve, Those slotted screws...
They are buggers for sure. I Just delt with one last weekend. A bit of a toughy.

I have done away with the slotted, beveled bugger in one instance with out the dreaded spring damage.
I'm happy with it's current fit+function.

"bugger" alert. Beep, Beep, Beep. one more "bugger" than necessary in last post ;-) ;-)
apologies, 2many, for the smart-arsedness.
it didn't seem clear to me how you go about buying 1 item out of a set.
like, i don't want footrest springs, or rear brake return spring. was there a place on that site to order individual springs? 'cause i can see myself leaving some money there, for sure.
i've ended up buying a 3/8 bolt and grinding the head to conform to spec (sort of). the triumph bolt is only 1" long and doesn't have a lock-nut. sometime in the future i will be cutting the head off the propstand, rotating 180 deg, rewelding, screw in the bolt from the outside, no nut to catch the spring, problem solved.

Hey Steve,

What I did was contact the seller to see what the cost would be for two K/S springs alone.
He responded with a price.

In regards to the kick stand bolt in the photo...
The bolt itself is right off the shelf at the hardware store. It already had a low profile hex head that spans the beveled kickstand's backside. I shortend the threads.
But it's a replacement for a long ago modification that was to drill out the pivot bush and kickstand larger, retap the thread, and install a nut and bolt from a rocket 3. (larger diameter)
My rocket 3 bolt had cracked half of it's low profile head off over the years, thus the current replacement bolt off the hardware store shelf.

On another note, I've seen some kickstands that have a hook welded on for the spring attachment, others with a peg and a groove in it. (matching the peg on the frame)
If you are riding the groove, your spring is out far enough to pivot without scraping accross the bolt's head. If you are having your spring ride too close to the kickstand or the frame it may very well drag accross the head of the bolt no matter what assembly you have on there.

By the way I was just looking at one of the other ones I have...wiith a "j" hook welded to the kickstand, and I see it does want to slide accross the "j" towards the kickstand. It drags accross the head of the pivot bolt. Stange that the one in the photo above has a different peg. Same as the type on the frame. And with that set up the springs stays in place and out of the way leaving clearance for a bolt with a hex head.

Here's a quick video showing what it takes to replace a stand spring on an SS.
It doesn't take much. Notice how the spring clears the piviot bolt.

Ian, I know your just being comical, But I had my concerns as well!
The SS was merely leaning on a jack.
In the clip, the first attempt to draw the spring into place saw the bike move a bit. Worried about loosing it to a fall, while on the fly, my right boot was placed on the front tire to prevent a rolling off the jack.

So although replacing the spring is easy, it may require two hands and a foot! :laugh
Certaily this is excelent food for thought for those who have not yet become "one" with their B50.
