Fallen Foul of the Kickstart Quadrant!

Post by Malcolms Lad » Thu Jul 07, 2016 10:26 am

Hi All,

I have fallen foul of the B50 kickstart quadrant in B44 cases, before I go all out and get it machined to suit does anyone perhaps have a B44 3/4 kickstart quadrant with bearing they'd be happy to swap for this B50 item?

It is an original one mate based on what I have seen:

Didn't want to go off machining something that may be of good use if a swap benefits someone.

Yesterday was set for the first leap of faith until I had cover issues. My quadrant is fully cleaned and fitting with a shiny new torrington needle roller, really should have looked a little closer but hey ho.

If not does anyone have or can measure what distance is from the kickstart gear to to the shoulder on the 3/4 shaft is on a b44 quadrant?

OK, there are two types of kickstart arrangements. On my FS, I have swapped between the two with relative impunity. I don’t think there are any changes to the cases (but I’m sure someone will say if there are).

These parts need to be fitted together, and the difference is on early machines the ratchet goes inboard (see here), and on later machines, it goes outboard (see here) . The ratchets directions are opposite and the kickstart spindle has its teeth outboard (early machines) or inboard (later machines), so the three parts (ratchet, pinion and spindle and maybe the bush as well, but can’t remember) need to be fitted as a kit and are not interchangeable early/late. Although this is illustrated in the parts list drawings, the actual parts are listed as the same part numbers, they are not.

Giving this a bit more thought, are the splines on the mainshaft the same length? If not, the later arrangement will fit on early models, but not visa versa.

joe have just measured the b50 and the b25/b44 kickstart quadrant nose lengths. the b50 item measures .712" from the inside face of the qaundrant teeth to the end of the nose. the b25/b44 item measures .932" so now you should be able to identify what you have there. regards midgie.

Hi Malcoms Lad. A bit off topic but I saw you replaced the OEM cover fasteners with allen bolts. The philips one's on my B50 are pretty torn up, so I was wondering if you could tell me where you got them. Thanks!
