Kick-start aid

Interesting article in May/Jun edition of Motorcycle Classics about installation of the new KickMagic pneumatic starting assist (made by Classic Bike Experience in Essex VT). If it had been available four years ago I would probably not have parted with the B50T. Anybody here tried the KickMagic?

I think that the carrying of a compressed air cylinder in Europe would be subject to numerous regulations, including the application of hazardous warning label's and a whole host of construction an use rules. Not being able to stay upright is one of my problems (nothing to do with age, I have always regularly fallen or been knocked off) and I'm dubious about what a compressed air cylinder would bring to the party.......This cynicism is brought to you by someone who currently doesn't have any leg issues, I reserve the right to change my mind should advancing years and/or injury alter my perspective, :shock:

The kick start aid is matched for the starting a twin, no information on a 500-600cc single?

"to provide up to 160 onboard start assists ' -- --- Assists, sounds like my Norton 850 MKIII Electric Start. I bought it new and the owners manual and the dealer both called it a Electric assist. If it stalled at a traffic light and was all warmed up, it might start the bike by itself. But normally it was push the starter button while kicking the beast.

Just like a good electronic ignition can mask less than perfect carboration settings, poor starting is going to be down to something wrong with the compression, ignition or mixture, spinning the engine quicker at startup using assistance may similarly cover up the real underlying problem. Due to the legendary starting issues with the B50, there has been a lot of effort and investigation in this direction, but most regular riders find the correct settings and techniques only a few have invested time, effort and money into alternative starters. IMHO, Roscoe Coffman's solution is the most appropriate starting assistant for the B50.

You can sort out the 850 MK3 starter.

1. Thicker cables

2. Heavy duty solenoid

3. 4 pole conversion to starter

4. High CCA battery

If you have EI which over advances when the voltage drops then add a voltage buck in series, 5A capacity should do it, and this will retain 12V at the Boyer until the battery will not turn the starter.

Power Arc EI is one of the very few that will work down to 6v. It is the only EI the Fred at old Brits will use on a 850 MKIII. Kick back on a electric starter bike can get very expensive real fast. A kick back can destroy the starter spraque .
