Which is correct? The level when screwed in or screwed out, or doesn't it matter.

All across the range, the absolute answer is here.

IMHO, gearbox oil level is not critical, the tolerance is probably +0%/-30%.
So unless you are racing or thrashing it, as long as there is something in there you will be OK until the next check and top-up. (The +0% is because if you overfill it, it is going to leak out of a bearing or shaft).
