P92 At Sammy Miller

The following pictures were taken recently (JUN09) at the Sammy Miller museum. The bike featured in a magazine article (Classic Bike I think, it was on the seat, but I didn't look at it!!). I read it when it came out and seem to recall that it was a re-build of the P92 based on the available knoledge at the time, but before all these wonderful drawings turned up. I think the engine is standard B50 without the P92 mods, no doubt someone will correct me here...

I would have said speak to Bob Stanley about it. he put it together. However once he has finished one of Sammy's projects he likes to move on to the next. I have spoken to him about this bike a few times, and he just replies with a few dry/laconic comments and moves the conversation on to something else. But thats Bob.

Sammy Millers place was one of the stops I really wanted to make on my UK trip in '07 but it was one of the things I didn't get to do after Gerry and Mark poisoned me. :(

If you come again Stan, we'll make sure you get better hospitality. All we have to do is keep you away from those northerners ;-) After all they eat sausages made from blood :!: Go further north, and you don't want to know what they do with a sheeps stomach. It's safe down south. We have treats like, "Toad in the hole" and if your really lucky you might even get to sample some "spotted dick".

As much as I don't want too I must get back too work

P92 at Sammy Miller's

I'm just now getting through my August copy of Classic Bike Guide. I came across an article about the P92. I've heard, actually seen, you guys talk about this bike but really knew very little about it and how it related to the B50. i scanned the article and am posting it here. I hope that isn't some breach of magazine law. it isn't long, but I thought it was pretty interesting. Looks like the P92 would have been a pretty neat bike if it had madeit to the production line. hope you enjoy the read.

Just looking at those photos again this prototype didn't actually use the engine designed with the different head. The different head used the twin exhausts but this retains the single and looks like the exhaust header is retained in the head like the Norton and Triumph engines in it's day. There does seem to be a modification on the clutch end of the primary case and the breather was moved around the back of the case. They were obviously playing around with spare bits from the BSA factory.

One wonders about how many different styles of prototypes were actually designed and fully or partially built. To have played around so much they must of had faith that the B50 engine was still a viable model.

Didn't they start using disc brakes in 75?

I have several articles with the P92 in it and I seem to recall reading that the pile of parts he bought came with very little by way of original engine bits. I think Sammy sourced a B50MX engine from the states as a basis for this one.
Great concept, I still want one........

not sure about the intro of discs, i thought '73 on brand T. so the BSA's just missed on that one. and the T160 in '76(?) had a rear disc along with the T140's of the time. don't know about Commando's.
yes, i reckon the B50 would have been around for a long time and the competition from the orient might have finally pushed things along a bit quicker development wise. the P92 addressed many of the problems when development of the B50 stalled with the company's failure. i'm glad they made the effort 'cause i lurrv the concept :cool:

After going through SteveS's P92 CD and looking closely at photos of the Sammy Miller bike,
it looks like they modified the frames top tubes under the petrol tank.
Are there any photos of the bike with the tank and seat removed ?

So unless proved otherwise: The P92 at the NMM is the origonal and ONLY prototype. The P92 at Sammy Miller has never claimed to be an origonal, but was built using the best available knowlege at the time (this was before the drawings turned up) as an exercise of what might have been.
