Front Brake Stay/Fork?

My 74 tr5mx was just roughly assembled when I got it with 18" road wheels on it. I put the 21" mx wheel in and there is no way to connect up the front brake stay arm? I'm wondering if the forks are not the correct mx forks

The right side slider should look like this.

The upper attachment is for the 6inch brake and the lower is for the 8inch brake.

That stay nut on the brake plate belongs behind the right fork???? Don’t know. It has been so long since I have bolted one of those brakes to my forks.

If you are going to use a brake stay it MUST be under tension, buy you don't need one if you assemble it correctly!

Yes you are correct about it needing to be under tension (mechanical engineering background). Could you explain how to assemble without the need for the stay? I don't want to try to reinvent the wheel

I think your mount has been cut off by an SS owner. I did that with mine. Still have the bit. perhaps you could evostick it on.

Ok thanks. My fork leg doesn't look exactly like that. I don't have that attachment point on the back side and I also don't have the rib on the outside. I can't see any evidence of the attachment lug being cut off, if it was they did a really good job!

I do not think that the 1971 OLF 250's had the rib on the forks, I think that came on the later models. I was told years ago that was how you could spot the correct forks for the TR5T . " Look for the rib".

It's just the first years of OIF who had the rib... and Johnu, maybe you have two left sliders on your fork ...and seems to me that 74' models had no more the rib ...in fact my friend robert's 74' TR5T hasn't and it's a standard machine , never modified..

I thought ribs were early too, but it cant be two left sliders as it does have a lug for the large conical hub. My best guess is that part No 20-0104 has been removed. What ever the history, you need the correct tube or to modify the one you have.

I had a old man moment and posted it backwards. It is the early forks the had the rib. I have three stock 1971 250's and 2 spare front ends for them. They all have the "rib". Another set that I have that is the later forks does not have the rib. I will check my stock 1974 TR5T later. At my age, my brain is getting too full. When I learn something new, I have to forget something else to make room for it.

Ok thanks! I'm not sure that these are the original forks for the bike as this one is an mx model but at least now I know I have to modify it somehow.
