Registering an historic BSA

My long delayed application for an historic registration for my US import B50 came back rejected today. I thought that the letter from HMRC saying all import taxes had been paid, together with dating certificate and correct application form would be enough but they are asking for "the original non-UK registration certificate or export certificate" and "If the original document is not available, you must tell us why and provide any other import/proof of purchase documents you have that relate to the vehicle, e.g. shipping documents, invoices."
I bought it in 2013 and there is no chance I could obtain any further documents.

Have any UK members got experience of how to get round this situation.

You could try contacting/speaking to the BSA owners Club as they have some good guidance on their website. To some extent it worries my as in 2006 I bought my TR5T in the UK, With a receipt from the guy, but it was a US import and had been used as a farm bike. I also have a B25SS frame that came from to US to go with a UK B25FS engine, from the UK. So I would appreciate it if you would keep us abreast of how you fare.

I have just had the same problem, but they emailed me and I sent a reply straight away because they said they were putting the application on hold.
DVLA seem to have become a lot stricter on imported vehicle first registrations and they are now asking for the original Title or Registration Document from the country of origin. There is a solution but I would appreciate if you would send me a PM please.

I will be interested in the responses you get as I have just sent off an application to the DVLA with the same docs as you describe for my A65.

I successfully completed applications for my B50T in Nov 2018 and more recently my A75 in Jan 2020.

Have you got any further with the DVLA?

I got my docs returned today. I guess it's taken a bit longer than usual because of the Covid-19 situation but at least in my case the application has been approved

After the rejection I wrote back on 24th June Saying that ;
1 In 2014 when it was imported, a title document didn't seem to be a requirement.
2 The motorcycle was a wreck when bought and in all probability hadn't been registered for road use in 30 years so was unlikely to have had an American title document.

Don't know which argument caused the change but yesterday a letter arrived giving be a J registration. Now I just have to get a 9,5 x 6.5inch number plate and decide whether I want yellow reflective which didn't come in until 1978 or black and silver at 3 times the price.
Then its time to ride before the summer finishes.

Glad you got it sorted :thumb

I've gone for the pressed black and silver on the A65 as the yellow doesn't look right to me. In my opinion you can get away with the yellow on the oif models as they look more modern in my eyes

End of the saga. Got a probably illegal number plate (Slocombes of Neasden was the dealer who sold me my first B50 in 1972). Took the bike out for its first road ride and it ran well. Only an intermittent speedo (dodgy cable) and poor front brake (cable needed lube) needed fixing. Also must fit mirrors. Full face helmet and stiff old body means I can't look behind me.Hope the rain stops soon.
